What Would A Glamorous Matriarch of Decades Past Use to Promote her Business?

The interior and branding of Mother’s Lounge evoke various bygone eras, featuring 1920s art deco elements, disco balls, plush velvet booths, and a brand story rooted in the history of queer ballroom culture. Answering this question helped me determine the overall aesthetic for the social media graphics.

Although the brand elements nod to different eras, they all share a common trait: they predate the invention of the smartphone and social media platforms. For that reason, I decided to design everything to intentionally look like tangible forms of media—magazines, newspapers, stationery, album covers, and more.

Mother’s Jewelry Box: Regal Drag Revue

One of the initial design challenges was to create the content for promoting the weekly drag shows, titled 'Mother’s Jewelry Box: Regal Drag Revue,' in homage to The Jewel Box Revue—the first racially integrated drag revue in North America, hosted by drag king Stormé DeLarverie from 1955 to 1969.

I wanted to do something different than the generic nightclub/party flyers that are so common in this industry. Using the theme of physical media as inspiration, I decided to mimic the look of a VOGUE magazine cover.

Note on design: All important elements were intentionally placed within the central 1080x1080px square to ensure visibility when cropped on the profile. Using the portrait format captures the user's full attention by occupying the entire screen in their feed.

Telling Mother’s Story

Sharing the story behind the Mother’s Lounge brand was a key objective following the initial launch of the social media pages. To maintain the theme of traditional media in my designs, I used images of polaroid photos arranged across a five-piece design, seamlessly integrated within an Instagram carousel post. This section also showcases other instances where I employed this technique to engage our audience with substantial information relevant to the brand.
